Montauk Cod Fishing Report For February 2010 Shows Promise For Future Stocks

Most of the Montauk cod fishing has been off southeast of Block Island which is the traditional fishing grounds for the cod’s migratory route from the Georges Banks to Block Island. The cod fishing in February off Block island can see codfish from 8-15lb on Average with a few fish hitting the scales up to 40lbs traditionally.

This year we have seen a lot smaller fish which means good news for the future of Cod. The average size Cod for February 2010 open boat trips have been in the low teens with some large mixed.

We have been limiting out on most of our trips throughout the month of February.

Reserve Space For Montauk Cod Fishing Today!

The Susie E is sailing daily out of Westlake Marina providing an open boat cod fishing experience with private boat feel. We are limited out passengers for the open boat to 12 people. Call to reserve your space for Montauk Cod Fishing today at 631-523-8862

The hot Montauk cod bite continued this week and weather allowed us to get in three great trips, all full-boat limits!!!

Tuesday, Feb. 2nd We left the docks at 5am, as the majority of passengers requested a late leave, and hit the grounds at 7am. It was a little choppy on the way out, but then went flat calm. The fish started coming over the rail around 8:30! Fish were in the 7 to 12 pound range and all passengers limited, with many catching well over their limit-though we only keep our 10 per person. Most fish were taken with fresh clams.

Wednesday, Feb. 3rd. Light winds and almost no sea, greeted us as we left the harbor for another great day of cod fishing aboard the Susie E II. Again all passengers went home with their limit of cod, though it took most of the day to get it done. The largest codfish weighed 15 pounds. After an initial flurry, we picked and moved, picked and moved, until it finally picked up in the afternoon. The bite seemed to be better further east, and that is where we decided to fish Friday.

Friday, Feb. 5th. After taking our first drift and not catching anything, we decided to anchor and crush some fresh clams in the shell to get them going! This spot lit up and produced an excellent bite from before sun up for about an hour. That was followed by an hour lull of picking. Then a strong turn-on lasted over an hour and a half and limited the boat. The catch and release action that followed, would have doubled our limit!!! Came back to the docks at 1:30, with everyone tired and happy, with bushels full of beautiful cod filets!

Saturday and Sunday the seas were too rough because of the storm. Next week looks like some bad weather. Monday is questionable, but Tuesday looks good.

We have a heated cabin, TV with DVD, microwave, toaster oven and griddle. Nothing better than hot food on a cold day of fishing! We only take 10 to 12 people a trip so there is plenty of room to fish and reservations are a must! For an open boat cod opportunity that feels like a private charter, call (631)523-8862

The highlight of this month is the Blackfishing out in Montauk. We are out just about every other day fishing for Montauk blackfish and have been doing well with fish to 10lbs. We have not seen blackfish this good out in Montauk in

many years and the blackfishing should continue strong over the next couple of weeks, well into December. This is the time to cash in on these tough fighting toothy fish.

We have had several charters recently targeting Blackfish and the time is really now to be fishing for black fish during prime season. We will be sailing an open boat so give us a call.

Montauk Fall Run Striped Bass Still Strong

Some larger Stripers have moved in with several fish over 30lbs coming over the rails in the past two days. These are the first big fish we have had in the rips since the recent blow. There is still a lot of season left this year for Montauk’s monster striped bass. Right now, there is still plenty of bait with tons of sand eels and even some adult bunker moving through the rips. The herring have yet to show up but when they do the bass fishing should be incredible. Give us a call to check in on the herring run which should happen very soon.

Montauk Cod Fish Are Here Already

Just yesterday, brother’s Jonny and Roy were out fishing a local spot for Montauk Cod. The buddies drilled 22 cod in just a few short hours, with Jonny taking Roy to school on how to bring them over the rails. The fish are here and we are are going to start fishing open boat this week, so give us a call to book your spot for Montauk Cod fishing.

The last two weeks have been fantastic out in the Mecca. Let’s start with the sharkin!

We have been out about 4-5 days each week sharking over the past two weeks. The crew form Rice & Dorne was out right before the MBCA tournament and we were scouting out the sharking grounds and had a banner day. The company outing for Montauk shark fishing was a great time for all as they had 14 blue sharks up to 325lbs and one Montauk Mako for the trip that we released. The “Big Britt” Jeremy Robertson handled the big shark with no problem and passed off as just another “little nibbler”!

Company trips are a great way to bond with a team and we can provide recommendations for restaurants and arrange lodging for any size company. Like most company outings, we got a good deal on hotel rooms for the crew for their Friday Montauk corporate outing.

Most shark trips are getting close to double digit catches with lots a blue sharks in the slicks.

The night Montauk striped bass trips have been on fire. Fish over 40lbs this time of year are very common and almost every day we are limiting out on the catch. We have released a lot of big bass over 40lbs in the last week with the largest extimated at 44lbs. The night trips have been real consistant and should pick up even more as we come on the new moon. Anyone thinking of getting out for night montauk bass should try to find the time this week on the new moon. We have a few open dates open and we have been leaving the dock anywhere from 5-7pm based on the tide.

If you are around, come down and say hi at the boat in Westlake Marina. We put up an aquarium in front of the boat full of all the local species and kids really love it.

Fish are taking a lot of methods and parachuts are still counting for most of the action out in the main rips. Biggest Striped Bass this week was 35lb with many many in the low 30’s.

Montauk Shark fishing has also turned on, lots of Blue Sharks and a few Mako’s in the mix. We were out every day in the Star Island Shark Tournament. We had a real heart breaker as a 300lb+ Mako threw the hook at the last second boat side after a wild battle with some great jumps. This fish would have taken the overall largest fish in the tourney!!!!!

There were a few Threasher sharks in the high 200’s and several big fish were hooked but not landed. The bigger fish are here so we are hitting prime time for Montauk Shark fishing in the next few weeks. This week we have another tournament so hopefully the boats will continue to do well.

The fluke are in thick but lots of shorts in the mix. Most trips are averaging fish in the 3-7lb range. The largest fluke this past week tipped the scales at 10.01 lbs.

This saturday we are getting out for our first Shark trip of the season…Sharks are back to the west with some good Threashers taken, the bluefish are here so the sharks should be right behind them.
